Gib Ihm Gibbon was our game for Global Game Jam 2024, built around the theme "Make Me Laugh". So naturally, we did the most reasonable thing possible and made a game about a gibbon slapping the shit out of zoo visitors because he doesn't want to be petted!
I was mainly responsible for the character controller and sound implementation, which honestly was a great fit for a game like this. If the movement feels a little wild and the slap lands with the right amount of dumb force, the joke works.
My higlight of this game jam was creating the best slap experience possible. Together with our sound designer we iterated quite a lot over the slapping to make it feel really good and i think we ended up doing a pretty good job!
"Make Me Laugh" was probably my favorite game jam theme ever. During the whole jam, we kept laughing at our own game. Every time I looked over at our artist and saw the ridiculous character models he was making, heard our sound guy doing weird monkey noises right next to me, or tried to get the silly ragdoll physics working, I had to laugh, and so did the rest of the group. I am also weirdly proud that this project became my first voice acting role as a zoo visitor.
